Taking the time to become aware of ourselves at a deeper level benefits all aspects of our life:

Awareness of ourselves and our interrelationship with others and life itself is essential for peace of mind and wellbeing. This has been the teaching of the wisdom traditions throughout the centuries. A modern Australian spiritual guide and teacher Ian Gawler expresses it like this:
"The breath is our connection with something wonderful and mysterious, our life force or spirit – those life-giving energies which are subtler than food and water. Through the breath we interact with the environment and gain sustenance from it. By watching the breath, we can become aware of the intimate connection between the inside of the body and the outside environment, and the constant interaction between the two. The breath is the life sustaining rhythm, which joins the inside with the outside, endlessly receiving new life and releasing what is not needed.
Deliberate mindful breathing helps to slow down a tendency towards excessive thinking and brings us back to our senses.
Mindfulness of Breath develops a deep respect for the essential, life-giving source of the breath. In English we use the words ‘inspiration’ for breathing in (and also for being inspired by something), ‘expiration’ for breathing out (and also to mean dying) and ‘respiration’ for the process of breathing. The Latin roots of these words are quite revealing: inspirare (inspiration) means ‘the spirit within’; expirare (expiration) means ‘the spirit leaves’; and respirare (respiration) means ‘the spirit returns'."
